Kelly…awesome video…numbers are the enemy of precision. I’m a firm believer that we, as a populace, have forgotten how to use geometry. We can do the math but no longer know how to apply it. This man probably couldn’t do the math, but I would venture to guess that he knew more application than most math teachers today. The way he found the radius of the circle for the bottom of the churn is as follows:
Set dividers to to approximately 1/6th the circumference. Step of around the circle, adjust any error by 1/6th the error. Try again. do this until you can step the dividers around the circle exactly 6 steps. Your dividers are now set to the radius of the circle.
To quickly see how it works:
Set a compass to any setting draw a circle. Without altering the compass setting. Put the point of the compass on the edge of the circle and begin stepping around circle. You will have exactly 6 steps.
