My 92 shoulder plane was square and flat. Like you said Dan some of the edges a little sharp used a file to take edge off then 250 grit abrasive. The iron was sharp probably good enough to use. I still flattened back of iron then put a very fine micro bevel on iron.
Just bought a 90 Bullnose plane more of Stanley’s bog standard stuff I flattened sole of plane. The iron not the same quality as the 92 I still flattened back and put micro bevel on iron.
The Stanley spokeshave I got need a lot of work the curve sole I have made smoother using finer grits of abrasives. The cap I smoothed back side. Less said about the iron tried flattening back after an hour I’ve conceded that it is a bad one. The place where iron sits in body need a good filing and smoothing out. To top it I found a round base spokeshave in better order and work quite nicely.
I have order two Ashley Ilse spokeshave cutters 3mm thick. I am sure I will get a nice flat back with those.
