That actuator bar goes in a slot on the side of the red nut – actually the side of the pin that sticks down through the plate. In your first picture, it looks like the bar was still partially in that slot in the side of the nut but the entire nut had rotated counterclockwise looking at it from the front. Other than the nut being out of the bent bracket and maybe the bracket being bent back open or maybe flattened, the rest of it is correct. I’ve attached my pics again – looks like one of them didn’t make it the first time.

But returning to Amazon is easy: a few clicks and you get a return shipping label in pdf. Print it out, affix to the box and drop the item in the nearest post office. At least that’s how it works where I am. You’ll need to put into a new box though — the original box wont survive the return trip. Then try your luck again and reorder 🙂
Yes, the retaining clip is definitely flattened which is why it doesn’t line up with the casting. I think part of the vertical red rod may have also sheared off as there is not much of a ‘slot’ in it, more of a small ledge adjacent to a ~1-2 mM high uneven raw steel edge at the very tip of the rod. In short, this one’s a lost cause.
After getting such a close look at the QR mechanism, I can see why some have said that the drive-screw does not engage immediately. That nut has seems to have a lot of play in how it ‘falls’ off the drive, and the actuator bar basically sortof crams it back upwards in the general direction of the drive-screw, so depending on how it lands it might need some movement to get fully seated back onto the threads.
Time to quickly release it back to the amazon jungle. The return turned out to be easy (so far – we’ll see if the credit appears). Printed a free mailing label and took it to a UPS dropoff.

The design of the thread and the nut, when you analyze how it functions, is ingenious. The nut only has to partially engage the threads in the lead screw and the slope of the threads will pull the nut up tight against the screw. Very clever design! I took mine apart and did some cleanup on the threads at each end of the nut and it functions perfectly. You’ll be very happy when you get one that isn’t damaged.
Update: Sent back the broken vise with free return shipping (I think this was free because I’m using a free ‘sample month’ of Amazon Prime). They shipped another out right away (delayed en-route because the box degraded and UPS ‘tried’ to repackage it. Second delay at UPS nearby as our normal carrier person can’t lift objects that heavy and they had to find one that can).
This one is not broken (the box, however, looked like it was rolled down a hill since all the corners were squashed). Looking forward to installing it and not having to come up with complicated clamping arrangements on the bench anymore.Glad to hear you got a replacement even if it came “tumbling down the hill” 🙂
Good luck with the install — a strong and stable vise makes a huge difference. I worked years using clamps and 5″ vice that attaches on to a ledge. It was not fun. Now another happy camper with my new eclipse 9″ though its a bit too heavy for my narrow bench. You will be pleased with it.
Interestingly, on amazon.ca, return shipping is free for damaged products. I got my vise from Lowes Canada and they offer a good deal with free shipping (better than US pricing, for a change :). In case anyone from Canada is looking to buy.
