My brother works at a lumber yard that specializes in finishing wood. It is usually pretty boring wood – all straight grain, clear, practically perfect in every way.
With every shipment they get some off grade stuff in they typically trash. I have had him bring some home lately and I have accumulated quite a bit.
I have 36 feet of 1×12 mahogany and several feet of 1×2, 1×3 and 1×4 maple and oak. It is all very twisted, cupped, and bowed. The straightest piece I can find by eye is 3 feet. I have already made a few boxes, used some for sawing practice, and have made a palm beading tool.
Does anyone have any ideas on other uses? I would like to use it to make some tools. I was thinking I could make a few gauges. Anything else come to mind?
The pictures show not even a 4th of what I have. If you live near Seattle and want a piece or two, send me a pm and we can arrange a pickup. Free of course
How about a giant wooden corkscrew. Seriously, small projects should be OK. But if you try to straighten some by thinning and flattening, don’t plane it to final thickness right away and then let it sit for a couple days after flattening to see the reaction. It could use a second flattening after internal stresses are released by planing.
