I am reading through “Essential Woodworking Hand Tools”
It’s a good book but I’ve a question and I’ll probably have a few more questions as I read along, so I was hoping someone could answer them for me please.
On page 166 it says to spray the diamond stone with water, but I was told to never ever use water as it will cause rust after a while. I didn’t think diamonds could rust so can you use water? I’m going to use Trend Lapping Fluid or 3 in 1 oil but I was hoping to clear up the water issue.
As far as I know, Paul uses glass cleaner (not window cleaner), as he states here: https://paulsellers.com/2013/05/four-days-left-of-the-nine-day-course/
“Q.: What’s the liquid in the spray bottle you use on your diamond plates?
A.: I use inexpensive glass cleaner. That’s not window cleaner by the type of glass cleaner sold as auto-glass cleaner. I buy it from the Dollar Store in the US or the Pound Shop in the UK. It’s safe, keeps the stones from clogging guaranteed and usually costs no more than a dollar or a pound.”
The diamonds don’t rust, but the steel plate may or more likely, abraded steel particles.

5 May 2016 at 3:49 pm #137036I used water for over a year (and still do when my glass cleaner is out), I got rust on my coarse plate once because I forgot to wipe it down. It came off with a brush though.
Most glass cleaner is 99% water. The reason it works “better” is because the added ammonia helps evaporate the water before rust cam form. I would still wipe the stone dry though
I usually use water with the plates, sometimes with a little dishwashing soap and sometimes just water.
The plates themselves don’t rust, the steel particles on the swarf are what actually rust, so make sure to wipe them down when you finish sharpening.
I’ve been using them(DMT interrupted surface) this way for 7 years and just have to replace the coarse one this year because it wore down
hope it helps
regards
