4 November 2014 at 7:33 pm #120523Hi David we’ve got a venue lined up from the local council we are just waiting to hear about funding from a couple of sources before we can go ahead, but we’ve got past the first part of the funding procedure fingers crossed.
4 November 2014 at 9:51 pm #120528Thanks Eddy but I’m much too young and active for this I’m 44yrs old from what I’ve I’ve read and I skimmed through it, it’s for retired people with health issues.
4 November 2014 at 10:03 pm #120529I tell you what I’ll have a proper read of this before I dismiss this. Obviously I know nothing about it and shouldn’t of made any comment on it. Thanks Eddy for the link.
4 November 2014 at 10:09 pm #120530you are partly correct about the age thing because thats what it was set up for but its not the case anymore well not here in the UK anyone can attend any age any sex any craft ,whilest dealing with the health issues it is a great way of attracting funds from charitys and local councils
4 November 2014 at 11:00 pm #120532But from what I’ve glimpsed through you have a CEO to answer to so that means your freedom to do what you want and how you want is limited to whatever guideline they set out to you. I’ve been in business for myself for too many years to be able to adapt to this. The only person I need to answer to is myself and believe me when I say that is difficult enough I think I am my own worst boss.
Again I could be wrong but one day in the future I have a dream to open up my own school with proper apprenticeship programs, just how am I going to achieve this I’m not entirely sure. As in this modern world the use of hand tools only or even basically hand tools in general have been virtually made redundant. I do know if one wanted to be recognised as a cabinet maker after 20yrs being in the industry in order to get that piece of paper kids get after doing their 4 yr apprenticeship one would have to go through an exam via the TAFE college. One would have to be proficient in the use of machinery otherwise they would not successfully pass. This is what I meant about difficulties in having apprentices in a hand tool only apprenticeship program. Having such a school that I envisaged in my head with the type of teachers I would need would require a lot of money.
When I was very young there was a school in England it cost $5000 one would have to be already proficient in the craft and would have to have his own tools. Acceptance to this school was based upon the applicants portfolio of the type of work they had done and their skill level. You couldn’t go there as a beginner so this was mastery of the craft and it was a completely unplugged shop. One had to reside in England for a year, there was no tolerance to any form of slacking off but one had to be dedicated to their studies. This was the ultimate dream for me to go to such a school but I neither had the money nor the skill level to attend such a school.
That was then whether or not this school still exists I’m not entirely sure, but this is the kind of school I was thinking about. In my version I would have three different skill levels beginner, intermediate and advanced and you couldn’t progress to the next level without successfully passing that current level. All students who successfully graduate from the advanced level would become members of the guild and just like in the 18the century they would become journey men. Throughout the years of working wood they could demonstrate if they wanted to a finished piece to the masters of the guild and that piece would be thoroughly examined from every angle, if accepted they then would be given the title of mastery. This is how it was done back then not everyone or hardly anyone ever reached the level of mastery. Unfortunately that word is being thrown around like a rag to anyone who can cut a piece of wood and join them together.
Do you understand now why I’m my own worst boss my goals and expectations of myself are set way too high.
5 November 2014 at 10:55 am #120565well there’s ambition for you, i just want to build stuff i can be proud of,and share the journey with others of a like mind ,have you done a course at the castle ,i think it would really set you on the right road ,
5 November 2014 at 11:14 am #120568I know it’s ambitious but it’s been lurking in my head for quite a few years. I am working towards it one way or another God willing it will happen but many more years will pass before I attempt this.
