First let me state…If you have the means build your plane according to Paul’s instructions on his blog.
I wanted to use what I had to hand. Several months ago I bought a #5 plane off Ebay and it came with an extra blade. I took that blade and used a file and coarse diamond stone and ground a radius on it. This is a tempered blade and it took a looong time. Then I took a block of oak and simply chopped out the opening for the blade. Made the wedge and added an oak pin for the wedge to seat against. Shaped the bottom and called it done.
It works quite well, see sample piece.
Fair warning this plane is wider than Paul recommends so I know that my seat shape will have to vary slightly. However, I was able to build the plane with what I had and I now have a scrub blade for my #5 bench plane.
Win, win.Attachments:

George.
30 November 2013 at 10:33 pm #22713Thanks George…not sure if it was less work or not, but I didn’t have to buy anything. I added up all of the things that I would have to buy to build per Paul’s method and it was close to $50US. I had nothing to loose by trying this alternative. Luckily it worked out.

2 December 2013 at 8:20 pm #22826Thanks David…yep, not going to win any beauty contests but it gets the job done. Here is the drawing. The escapement angle can be between 45-60deg. I used 60deg but if I build another plane I will probably go with 45deg. I don’t think it changes the function enough to matter though.

Thanks for that, I will have a look at where I could get a suitable blade that would not require any heat treatment.3 December 2013 at 12:59 am #22841Jon…not my method. Its just a take on the James Krenov style of plane. I took a chance with the chopping out of the opening. Not my idea either. Took this from the Japanese method of making a plane body.
