Hello all, There’s a nice record 10 rebate plane on ebay but I’m wondering if their any good? Anyone used one or found problems with them? Thanks in advance, Dave
Most Record planes I’ve seen are excellent quality! This one looks identical to the Stanley #10 1/4 and is the size of a Jack plane. I have the Stanley version and it works fine. You just have to get the rebate started with a fence and the plane is way wider than you need for most rebates. I would recommend looking for the dedicated Stanley or Record Rebate or Fillister planes with 1-1.5″ cutters, especially ones with nickers for cutting across the grain. Look at Stanley or Record #78. Another possibility is a wooden fillister plane with a fence and depth stop. There are usually a few of those available on eBay. I restored an old one that was worn and warped. It wasn’t really that difficult to do. The nice thing about these is the skewed cutter planes very nicely. Check out Paul’s older blog posts on rebate planes. Best of luck.
