Traditional Methods for attaching a table top

Is there a way to attach a tabletop without using mechanical fasteners? How has this been done traditionally?
Screws date back to 200BC they were hand made ofcourse, I would make buttons like Paul did in one of his videos I think it was the coffee table. You could also explore Japanese joinery which to me is the ultimate in joinery techniques, the most advanced method known and still practiced in Japan. They use no fastners in their furniture. One method I know of that they use is pins, for now stick to the bottons they allow the expansion and contraction of the table top.

I haven’t upgraded to premium yet* to see the coffee table videos, but I assume by buttons you mean the L shaped cutouts which screw into the underside of the top, and hook into a groove in the apron. Is this correct?

Yes that is correct.
If you have a hammer, chisel and drill then you can make buttons.
