Followed Paul’s chessboard project. Cherry and curly maple for squares, cherry for the edges and ash for the dovetail splines. All done with hand tools.

Chessboard made with curly maple and (sort of) curly cherry. Border is Kahya. The center of the board is 1/4″ MDF with a layer of quarter sawn oak strips veneered to the underside to counter the chess board. A bit of oil-varnish to pop the curl and mellow the color of the maple. Then lots and lots of blonde shellac with a final topcoat of wax so that the board has a soft sheen instead of a distracting glare.

Still can’t believe I was able to do this!! This is a birthday present for my Daughter in Walnut for the dark and Jacaranda for the light squares
![A relative's home suffered significant flooding and required removal of their Brazillian Cherry (Jatoba) hardwood flooring which had some historical sentimental value to them. I salvaged enough of it to make this chess board that might help carry their memories forward. I used the Brazilian Cherry for the border and dark squares, leaving some of the marks and dings in the border to preserve some character from its prior use as a floor, and then some maple I already had for the lighter color. I found the Brazilian Cherry very difficult to work, requiring near constant tool sharpening. Finished with shellac / wax and presented as a Christmas gift last year.](https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Chessboard-by-Chay-Wesley-scaled-768x1024.jpg)

I followed Pauls instruction and had a little help from him personally when he answered my question on the live Q&A. I am very pleased with the result! Walnut and Ash finished with shellac and wax

Lovely to get the cabinet scraper to do this. It’s taken a few goes at shapening to get it.
