Floor Lamp by Mike Towndrow
My Floor Lamp. Even though there are a couple of bits I think I could have done better, I’m really pleased with how my floor lamp has come out. I made it from recycled oak sourced from Oxford Wood Recycling (OWR) in Abingdon. A remaining off-cut of old oak skirting board, which is what I used for the legs and some of the arms, is leaning against the wall next to the lamp. There was damage to the skirting board where it had been ripped rather than unscrewed from the wall, but I managed to get two clean lengths for two of the legs, and then had to patch a few holes for the third leg. I couldn’t find anything wide enough to make the shelf and lower circle from single pieces, so each is made from three edge jointed pieces. The table is slightly thinner than the 1” shown on the cutting list, because that’s the nearest I could find at OWR. But it’s close enough and as the table only sits on the arms and isn’t jointed in any way, I reckoned it wouldn’t really matter. Nor did it matter that I’ve left one or two blemishes in the surface of the table left over from nail holes. I did do a little bit of patching up, but thought that leaving some evidence of the former life of my lamp would be quite nice! I also wanted the cable to emerge from below the bottom circle and into a foot switch rather than from below the table. This meant an angled hole needed making into the shelf support from both above and below for the cable. I wasn’t sure if it would work, but in the event it was just fine. To anyone starting this project I’d definitely recommend glueing up the shelf support arms after the top and bottom circles have been glued to the legs and set. I tried doing it all at once and it wasn’t easy to position so many clamps at once and also keep an eye on everything remaining properly seated. The shelf arms I found particularly awkward to clamp, as with their shape and the uplifters in place any pressure on the end of them tends to make them try to tip up and out of the mortice hole. So, easier to focus on these as a separate glue up operation.
