I made this Garden Bench for a Memorial to my Wife
Teak Garden Bench by Stephen Hillier
This garden bench was made from genuine teak. The timber cost £800 – so not for the weak hearted. The pattern was taken from another (ex public) park bench but with enbellishments of my own. Without the inspiration and help from Paul’s videos I would never have contemplated doing this project. Hey, it’s not perfect but you would not know it from the picture. All joints are draw bore joints. Seat slats are screwed with brass screws and plugged with teak.

A big hello from the West Coast of Canada, Paul! And yet again another thank you for all the amazing things I’ve learned from you over the last couple of years. From not knowing which end of a chisel to hit, to clean crisp shoulders on wonderfully tight drawbore mortise and tenon joints. This bench was a pure joy to build – thank you for putting it on the projects list. (It will, of course face the opposite way, but I thought you might enjoy the view I’ll be taking in with my pre-workshop coffee in the mornings 😁.) This one is tight-knot pine, stained and finished with multiple coats of marine varnish to protect the best I can against our wet and salty air. Hand tools rule!

A slightly smaller version of Paul’s Garden Bench. Leg posts made from meranti. Rails and slats made from kiaat. I had to reduce the size due to the size of stock that I had available.

Pine Garden Bench finished with outdoor varnish
Garden Bench by Brian Stormont
Made from spalted maple – not an ideal wood for an outdoor bench, but it will be kept on a covered porch. A pure tung oil finish has been applied.

My first time working with oak, making this garden bench for a friend. It took me about 80 hours and I loved every bit of it. I have delivered it on the same day I finished it and my friend was very pleased with it. It was great! Vlad
Garden Bench by Dave De La Cruz
This was made from Cypress Macrocarpa from fallen windbreak trees in Victoria, Australia. It was finished with some “outdoor oil” to help protect it and to try and keep the golden colour for as long as possible. I had a great time making this project. It was a lot of work (about 3 months nights and weekends) but very rewarding! I found the hardest bit was assembly and getting the seat slats to work with the curvature of the rails.

Rustic bench made from a western red cedar tree which was in our garden. It has retained its colour.

Paul’s design in wester red cedar. Router plane in black walnut. Pic taken with my old cell phone, thus the poor quality.
