Assuming it’s long grain to long grain,
The only reason to add dowels is to help align the joint so you won’t have to do as much planing to flush out the joint.
This of course assumes you align the dowel holes correctly.
The only time dowels or splines might do some good is when you expect high impacts, like on a workbench. Even than, whether it helps is open to dispute.
