Per request….finishing with milk paint…what little bit I know…
1. Sand all parts as usual.
2. The directions say 1:1 ration of milk paint powder to water. This is really thick! I thin it to the consistency of standard paint….thick but spreads well.
3. Paint it on…go quickly and stir often. Milk paint dries very quickly.
4. One coat should do it.
5. Wait overnight.
6. Don’t panic…it will be dead flat and very rough to the touch.
7. Burnish it with steel wool…actual steel wool, the synthetic pads won’t touch it. The surface will smooth out and darken about 1/2 shade. It takes some pressure, so don’t be afraid to go hard.
8. Clean up the dust.
9. Shellac and wax as per normal.
All the internal areas were given the shellac and wax treatment.
Try it on some scrap to get the feel for it. One of the nice things about milk paint is that you can mix just what you need. It took 4 tablespoons of powder for this toolbox.
Hope that helps…I’m sure there are many, many with more experience and knowledge than I how could weigh in on this.
