Just got an # 80 scraper. The body is in very good condition, but the blade…. seems that someone along the road did not had a clue about sharpening this tool. I cannot even tell if the blade is the original blade.
Question: Does someone know what is the original Stanley) blade thikness?Happy shavings!
16 July 2015 at 5:04 pm #128557Hello Sergio. The blade on my #80 is 0.0445 inch thick, 1.13 mm. I cannot say for certain if it is the original blade, but I think it is.
16 July 2015 at 6:19 pm #128560Thanks, Matt. 1.1 mm is what mine measured. I am getting a lot of chattering, maybe I should improve my sharpening skills…

Cheers
22 July 2015 at 5:14 am #128721I’ve only had limited experience with my #80. Probably because I haven’t gotten it to work properly. I’m certain it has to do with my sharpening it (putting on the “burr” or cutting edge). I have a suspicion that I’m putting too much of a burr. This is something that will come with practice and maybe some experimentation.
Good luck with it and let us know how it goes.
22 July 2015 at 1:29 pm #128736Yes, Matt. To much of a burr makes it too agressive, chattering and giving a rough surface. Turning a more gentle burrr (less angle and less pressure on the burnisher) made it work better. There is an enourmous variation according to the wood you are working on, some are more ‘scrapable’. There is some art on sharpening it….. But it is a saver on wild grain.
22 July 2015 at 1:32 pm #128737Yes, there is a video on sharpening it under “Tools and Technique”. It helped a lot, but does not substitue practice… somethig I´m lacking on this tool.
