Hey guys/gals
Haven’t been online much this past summer, us Canadians have to take advantage of our short summers! Now that winter is upon us I’ve started some little projects for around the house. I remember seeing this little stand for an iPad on one of Paul’s blogs some time ago and decided to give it a try 🙂

Dave,
Well designed and aesthetically pleasing. I can’t tell from the photos if it’s cherry or stained tulip. Or possibly mahogany?
Have you ever seen Roy Underhill’s folding book stand made from a single plank of wood. Very clever and ancient technique.
Someone’s got a nice present coming.

Hi Dave, I’m new around here so we haven’t met yet. I wanted to drop in and say what a nice project you’ve shared. And a great Christmas gift project.
I also like your bench. What vise did you use and when did you build it. I’m collecting my thoughts, lumber and ideas to begin my own bench.
Thannks.

Denise have you looked in the gallery for work bench ideas, a sturdy work bench with a good vice is a prerequisite for me,Hi Denise,
I’ve been a member here since day one :). My bench is a small one since I have limited space but I’ve built some large items on it. Tool cabinet, rolling tool chest etc. The main thing is to use Paul’s design, it’s the most practical bench design I’ve used. I just used 2×4 from Home Depot. Sort through them to pick the most clear boards you can find or to limit the amount of hand planing go with the clear pine, it’s already planed and has square edges unlike the 2×4’s which are slightly rounded. I think I ended up paying around 50 dollars for my bench. The vice is from lee valley, it’s the medium sized metal bench vice somewhere around 130 dollars. It’s solid and you can see by all the scars on my bench it’s used to hold everything for all jobs, including repairing a vacuum cleaner 🙂
If I had the space I make a double top bench with one vice at the end for sawing and one on the opposite side for chopping and stuff. The nice thing about these benches is they are so solid and inexpensive to build. Save the nice hardwood for projects 🙂 Paul has a video series on YouTube about the bench or in his dvd’s. I built mine about 2 years ago and I’ll have it for a long time I think.
