Hey just found this Vaughan mallet that seams to be exactly like the thorex.. http://www.vaughanmfg.com/shopping/Products/1-12-Nylon-Face-Hammer__NT150.aspx
2 October 2014 at 4:35 am #118808I’ve got three of those Vaughan hammers (kept trying to find the right size) as well as some of their other products. Always quality stuff.
The only problem I’ve had was with the finish. I don’t don’t like that shiny slick finish they come with so I normally sand it off and replace it with boiled linseed oil. On the last one I got the stickers on it had dissolved the finish which gummed up the sandpaper. Turpentine dissolved the rest but left a surface that just gummed up the sandpaper. I finally had to scrap it all off with a piece of scrap window glass. After that all is well.
These hammers work very well as chisel mallets.

Actually I got the attitude that my tools should suit me from Paul. Not any one video or blog post but I watched the way he took the sharp corners off his dovetail tool or rough up the handle of his chisel hammer to give him a better grip. I appreciated the idea that my tools should be something I liked using, comfortable to the hand, and suited to the work.
The scrap glass trick I got from the proprietor of our local hardware store. His grandfather taught it to him so he took me into their shop and showed me enough to get me started. Works like a charm. That’s why I go to their store BEFORE Home Depot or Amazon.
And in my tool buying I’ve collected at least a half dozen claw hammers with handles in various states. About a year ago I sanded all the handles down and put a tung oil finish on some and linseed on the rest to see what worked better for me. I liked the feel of the tung oil but it was a little TOO smooth. Linseed has a bit more traction in the hand I think.
So that’s how I got there. Just a collection of flotsam and jetsam. Nothing quite as extreme as the Wranglerstar clan but we can’t all be stars.

And I agree take the good tips where you find them and use the ones that work for you. Not enough people thinking for them selves these days..
12 October 2014 at 3:32 pm #119412I bought my Thorex Hammer off ofAmazon, it has the nylon handle with rubber grip like Paul’s. I have roughed it up as I don’t like a slippery handle.
