I was wondering if there is an alternative way to set the teeth without using a saw set.
I got a video by Frank Klausz where he sets the teeth on smaller saws with a screwdriver. Put the screwdriver between two teeth and twist. One tooth goes to one side, the other tooth goes to the other side. Skip two spaces and do the next pair.
I haven’t tried it though.

I don’t have a vice like that so I use two pieces of steel in my bench vise and whatever cheap copy or notebook paper I can grab to make the saw sandwich. Gives a perfect set every time no matter how well I did with my saw set so I would think it would be even more beneficial with these more field expedient ways of setting a saw.

Try it sometime, I think you’ll find it worth the time. -
