Anybody else do this?

I agree with ehisey on this one..the reliance on near-perfect flatness from a work surface is probably not ideal, esp in a precision tool like a shooting board. Sure, when you first build the bench the top is nice and flat, but over time, as it gets bumped and banged and stained and covered in dried glue by project after project?
And considering that all it would take is one more piece of plywood, dedicated to the shooting board, to solve the problem for the long term, this isn’t a direction I would take.
Having said that, I’ve seen in done, and by some great woodworkers, too. If you are getting good results, more power to you!
