Yesterday I went to the show with my daughter for the first time ever, over the years I’ve intended to go but due to work or something idiotic never ended up going but this time I took time off and went and had a ball. This was a woodworkers playground and the best part of it was the contacts I made.
The timbers available through private lumber yards were much cheaper, longer and thicker I could ever get through commercial lumber yards. They had all kinds of power tools which to be honest didn’t interest me much at all and the usual hand tool guys from the leading manufacturers were there and that’s where I spent most of my time. I got to try out the Lie Nielson’s 5 1/2 jack wow now that is a true work horse. I fell in love with it immediately, it was weighty, beefy and the right size to suit many of the projects covered here. I have a no.7 which is great but over kill for many of the projects I do. This plane flattened a single board in minutes and then if you wanted to you can finish it off with it or switch to a no.4. I also discovered a neat little trick these hand plane sellers use. Huon Pine slices like butter, completely effortlessy and glissens unlike I have ever seen before from a plane. But I put the plane through some oak oh boy did it work so well but at $500 and my mounting debts it was clearly out of my reach. Then I went on to look at some wooden planes and another one caught my eye. This one had a 60° there’s another one at 50 or 55 °angle and a 90° for scraping. One plane does two jobs by simply turing it around plus the blade when inserted centrally adjusts itself in the body eliminating the need for you to centre tha blade. Sharpen install it and get to work it immediately.
We finished off a great day listening to blues played on box made guitars, wow four strings only and it sounded unbelievable. The band was Aboriginal and my daughter joined in playing the sticks. I tell you what these guys played so good they could make the yanks run for their money.
I could imagine how big these shows must be in the UK and US if any of you ever get the chance to go just do it you will not regret it.
