Kinda slow around here so I’ll try and occupy some space. I’m working on shadow boxes for uniform items and wanted to dovetail the case, so I’ve been practicing, far from perfect, but getting there. My goal is to do one a day, but that’s harder to maintain than it sounds.
The box doesn’t have a lid yet, because when I was cutting a finger grip, the gouge slipped and sliced right through the end of the board.. I have to start that from scratch…
Here is my progress

That’s the truth! I’m getting ready to build a chest of drawers with a dovetailed carcass. Before I start cutting dovetails on the carcass I will practice cutting a couple everyday until I feel confident enough to cut them on carcass. I can cut dovetails fairly confidently, but I’m trying to get a flawless fit.
19 August 2015 at 2:21 am #129471Listen to this! I just finished the dovetails on my box with the sliding lid. It’s the first time all four were nearly perfect; I was so excited they fit that well I glued it up with a big smile on my face…then realized I hadn’t run the groove for the lid!!! Oh well. I suppose I have a chisel tray with a 5/8″ step down in the front. At least the dovetails are nice ?

@kevinjames, I know we all have a story of something that we did so right, followed by a boo boo or 2.
I just finished my first dovetail box. 1st pins I sawed onto the wrong side of the line. Kept the piece to make a shorter box…. Then I glued up my box with the lid clamped on to try and keep everything square…Forgot about the glue squeeze out inside the box. Spent a few hours trying to chisel and scrape it off. Needless to say, the inside is not pristine…
Now for a box with more than one dovetail on each side…. Baby steps. 🙂20 August 2015 at 7:10 pm #129571Nice, Dan. That’s a great way to get good at it. My eyebrows raised when you said “the gouge slipped and sliced …” I was afraid you were going to follow that with “… my finger”. We’ll sacrifice a board instead of a finger any time!
