I have taken on the garden bench project using cypress pine which is very long lasting outdoors and fairly cheap but as I have discovered very unpredictable with grain direction. My 11 year old daughter has been helping me resulting in the back supports being particularly rustic but she loves banging in the drawbores. This project has made the spokeshave and card scraper my new favorite tools. Progress so far attached
