No hard rule on the distance Franco. The housing dado in the apron is key to the strength of the bench. So IMHO I would set the legs in from the end of the apron a minimum distance that equals the thickness of your legs, ie. 3.5″-4″. This should provide a sufficient area of strength to the outside of the housing dado in the apron.
The bench in Paul’s video is 8 feet long and he comes in 9 inches at either end. I’m building a 6 foot long bench but started off with the same measurements. I stacked my bench top on to the finished leg sections and then adjusted things until I got something I was happy with. In the end, I went with 10 inches in from either end:
* Nice round number – easy to remember
* Slightly deeper cubby hole at each end of the bench
* Didn’t impact too much on vise placement
* Looked nice
* Very stable when I wobbled the bench around. I haven’t even cut the housing dados yet and it’s pretty solid – I was quite happy to sit on the bench.
