@billstennett forgot to mention that I got here from Lee Valley USA

If you’re in the UK, then the Record is awesome, I used one at Paul’s school in Wales and loved it.
28 August 2013 at 4:42 pm #17193@mexiquute – thanks for the info. Glad to hear that the record vices are good. I have managed to pick up two 52 1/2e (9″) vices on eBay over the last month or so and am looking forward to getting the bench finished. I haven’t had much time on it lately but hopefully soon!
In the meantime I presevere with the b&d workmate – so far I’be managed a few dovetail boxes; a wall clock and three sliding lid boxes (although I had to make 5 lids!)
Really can’t wait to plane something and not have to chase it around!

I should be in bed got to be up at 4amJust quick update.
Today, I though my 15″ Leevalley quick release steel bench vice had stopped working, but I had gotten some superglue on one of the smooth bars and it got stuck. It took me an hour to figure that out after taking the whole thing apart and calling leevalley for support 🙂
After 1 1/2 years of use the Leevalley vise is still working flawlessly.
Tom,
they both operate the same way. The 52-1/2 is 9″ (228mm) wide and the 52 is 7″ (177mm) wide. The 52 opens up to 8″.
Most people go for the larger vise. Mine is larger again and based on the ’53’, which is 10″ wide. It opens to 14″
I’d save my money for a larger vise. The 52 will get you going if you need something. You could sell it again, I’m sure.
Tom,
The 52 is a 7″ jaw width vise with a little over 7″ opening capacity.
I’ve been using mine, picked up at a flea mkt., for a couple of years now and am really pleased with it.
I added a 10″ jaw packing to extend the width and lost some opening capacity, but with leather lining I can hang a 6 ft. 2×10 from it with no problem.
If the price is right….go for it.
If you can wait, a #53 with 10 1/2″ width and a much bigger opening is worth it.
Either way you’ll end up with a lifetime vise.
Best,
Craig4 July 2015 at 8:33 am #128210For those of us in continental Europe, what are our options? The eBay vices from the UK are mostly collection only, and I don’t want to know what I’d be charged for shipping anyway 🙂
I recently purchased an old Record 53 (Made in England) from a gentleman in the UK who was willing to ship to me in the USA. Many times with eBay purchases, if you contact the seller and explain the problems you have had acquiring an item like they are selling, they are willing to work with you. My vise cost $90.00 US and the shipping was around $60.00 and, after using it for the past month, I’d consider it a real bargain at twice the price! The quick release function works so much easier than the Jorgenson I was using. I still have another Jorgenson as a tail vise (which I really don’t use all that often) but I’ll probably eventually replace it with another Record; a 52 1/2 or 53. For a tail vise, I could probably even go for a smaller 52.

Does anyone have one of these or heard about them?
24 July 2015 at 1:47 pm #128780Well, @gary ‘s post prompted me to have just another look on eBay… and I found a most fantastic UK seller willing to ship a Record 53 to me :))))
I paid £45 for the vice and £30 for shipping, which is ok considering how big and heavy this thing is! I’m happy to report I can actually lift it on my own 🙂 which I did not expect to. Everything looks fine, although of course I don’t have much idea (yet, I hope).
SO, I encourage others to just ask the seller, you may get lucky.
