Does it matter which way you lay the wood when preparing the benchtop? I was wondering whether placing them flat is acceptable, or do they have to be edge-side up? My thinking is along the line that I could have a thinnner top if I change my mind later. (i.e placing a 3″ x 2″ flat so I get a 2″ top instead of a 3″ one). Hope that makes sense.
Franco, if you are making it out of 2×4 SPF then I would worry about the top twisting and cupping. I believe that’s one of the reason to make the top with 2×4 glued up face to face, it tends to resist movement a little better and offers a pretty stable thick top. At the end of the day all tops will move tho, and you’ll have to flatten them out once in a while.
Also try to get the grain going all in the same direction so when you plane the surface flat you don’t get tear out in some boards and not in others. Don’t ask me how I know this!!
