As part of my carpentry apprenticeship here in Germany I have to pass a couple of exams where I am given wood and a drawing and have to make something in about six and a half hours. Today my emplyer decided he’d give me a ‘mock exam’ for the day.
My assignment was a sort of bottle rack, and I was sternly told I “was not allowed” to use power tools. I tried not to cheer too much…
Anyway, six hours later, here is the result.
Made with Japanese saws, a 50 year old Stanley #4 plane from my granddad which I smuggled in, and a record A 51 spokeshave.
Tomorrow I get the ‘evaluation’ which I expect will be pretty brutal: we ca’t have people going and enjoying this hand tool woodworking lark after all.
I’ve already been criticised roundly because the frame in the middle isn’t straight (guilty: I have a tendency to panic attacks even in mock exams and I was measuring that bit and succesfully fending one off at the time) and because the piece isn’t completely sanded because I ‘ran out of time.’
Oh, dear.
On the other hand, Paul’s method on the dovetails and a fair bit of practice has resulted in the fastest and tightest dovetails I’ve managed since the start of he apprenticeship, and it is partly because of the information from here that I was more confident and therefore managed my first exam (mock or otherwise) without a panic attack in the middle…
They can do their worst tomorrow but that victory is mine.
Thanks Paul…

17 July 2014 at 7:41 pm #59534Great result Andy Wow 6 hours that is way faster than i think I could do I tend to take my time but I am not trying to make a living from woodworking. Well done, let us know how you went on with the evaluation
18 July 2014 at 1:01 pm #59549Grade was ‘between a 3 (Satisfactory) and a 4 (Below average) which I think is a bit stingy. I personally think that the grade in my own college would be a passable 3.
My employer has been trying for some time to discourage me from using hand tools so I expect this is a part of it.

I took a couple of exams for Institute of Carpenters very similar pressure. One exam was to make a gate with a curved top rail shaped top of stiles and butt beaded panel. I think I got nearer 7 hours to complete that exam. That was quite some time ago. -
