Hey guys, I have just finished up the breadboard end cutting board and it turned out great. I was just wondering how the mortise and tenon design transfers to larger table tops, when you have to account for wood movement across the top.
If you were to do a hidden tenon breadboard end, you can leave gaps between the mortise walls and tenons. If you wanted to do exposed tenons on a larger dining table you would be left with gaps.
How is this resolved? Can you just use wedges to account for gaps in the mortise and tenon? Or would you aim for tight fitting joints and account for wood movement elsewhere. How would all of this affect the drawbore pins as well?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

15 April 2015 at 1:58 am #126486Ryan, Most breadboard end tables I’ve seen don’t have through tenons. I did a quick internet search and this link has the scenario that I envision (http://www.woodmagazine.com/woodworking-tips/techniques/joinery/breadboard/). It has a single, very wide tenon that gets pegged into the breadboard ends. The outer peg holes are elongated to account for wood movement. I’d have to guess that the outside mortise holes should be a little wide for the outside tenons to move, too.
Now, a few months ago Paul made the “occasional table” that has an unusual top with just one breadboard end. On that table (if memory serves), the three tenons were through tenons and they seemed pretty tight. I don’t recall if Paul discussed wood movement, but he probably did.
Thanks Matt, that link is the only information I have found as well, which was helpful.
I was hoping to get an answer that this topic has been discussed with Paul at some point through the projects. I think I’ll just have to watch the “occasional table” again, as I think there is a lot of information concerning this issue of wood movement and breadboard ends. -
