I have a little side project in the works and requires several narrow, short and deep mortises. In my practice mortises I have found it all but impossible to lever out the waste once I reach a certain depth. Digging the waste out with a narrower chisel works, but not very well. The angle is too steep due to the depth of the mortise and bruised mortise walls are usually the result. So after some research I found a Japanese chisel that is made for this sort of work. The ones that I found were expensive and I decided to that I could make make my own. After some trial fitting I arrived at a workable shape. Then I hardened and tempered the blade and installed a handle. This chisel is not a cutting tool. It is used to extract the waste that has been chopped by the mortise/bench chisel.
It works great. Here is an illustration drawing.
There is a little more info on my blog if your interested.

If it works for you you have saved a bit of money. Don’t forget to patent you mortise bottom outerer lol
A swan neck should work but I think you have to have a deep mortise for it to work.
I used swan neck many years ago on a lock mortise worked ok. The lock mortise gets covered by lock so really do not have to worry about bruising edge of mortise. -
