Thanks for the tip. The SM4211 doesn’t look like it will fit the Stanley knife so I ordered a die cast handle for 6 bucks. With shipping it comes to about 30 bucks for a handle and 50 blades, less than half the price of buying 50 Stanley blades. I’ll let you know what I think if the handle.
Gents,
I’ve had several of the US version for a couple of years now and use them for everything around the shop including Fiberglass and foam board insulation. When they start to get dull I sharpen them.
At this rate I estimate the original blade life expectancy to be something north of 25 years.
With 50 blades you’ll have about 1250 years . It’s only been 949 years since the Magna Carta was signed!
Best,
CraigI received the SM4211 blades today. They DO NOT fit a Stanley 10-049. The hole in the blade shank is too small and it is in the wrong location. Furthermore, these blades are thinner (.025″) than the Stanley’s at (.040″). This makes for an interesting twang when you are marking a knife line and come off of the end of the board. The blade is very flexible.
The die cast handle I ordered as Plan B is okay and the blades are extremely sharp. I will use the knife, but I wish the blades were thicker.I just checked. You are right in what you wrote. But, Paul uses the 10-598 which is a whole different tool.
I bought a pair of the 10-598 and the Swann blades look like they would fit nicely.
IMHO, the 10-598 is MUCH better than the US version (10-049). The blade is much thinner and seems sharper. Unfortunately they are hard to find on this side of the pond.
