Can you tell me what kind of wood is this?

I bought it out of the cut off pile at my local hardwood store. I forgot to ask them. Could it be sycamore?

Not sure John, is it a softwood or hardwood? Can you post a picture of the end grain?

looks like Maple to me but sycamore very much the same family of tree.

I am starting to think it is Maple too.
Steve, It is a hardwood, and here is the picture of the end grain.
This is a small chunk sitting on poplar.
I think it might make a good cane.

The sycamore has a more distinct “grainy” pattern to it, I don’t see that in these pictures. I also don’t see any pores in the end grain. I am at a loss here, sorry.
