I am slowly getting my tool selection together (somehow I feel this doesnt actually ever stop once you get the bug!) and looking to buy a second hand plough plane – I vaguely remember using these when at school but I cant recall are they any good for doing rebates as well as grooves or do I need to look for a seperate rebate plane or combination plane? In the meantime Ill keep my eye open for a cheap hand router or have a go at Paul’s ‘poor mans router’ so I can make the shooting board!
Some will do rebates (rabbets USA). The Record043 and 044 have the skate sole in line with the cutting edge and so cannot be used with a depth stop because the depth stop is on the outside of the sole. That being so, there is no restraint on the depth of cut as the sole has no wood to register against. But, there is hope, by clamping a second, sacrificial strip of scrap wood on the outside edge flush with the wood being worked, the sole will ride on that piece of wood and allow you to deepen small rabbets, depending on the rabbet size. The depth shoe will also work as it too rides on the sacrificial piece when you are to full depth. These planes are quite cheap on eBay ast between £10 and £25.
Also, I found that this works really well with the Veritas small plow plane too. I use this is for corner inlays and such. So for those who already have a Veritas, you can expand the functionality for small rabbeting very simply.
Thanks Paul! ..it gives me a bit of faith to go for an 043 or 044 and know that there are some tips and tricks at least to allow me to get by .. keep up the great work by the way ..inspirational tuition !
