Ken…staining pine is a for sure a pig in a poke. Done well, it looks really nice, but it can go really wrong really fast. Best advice I have is sanding sealer first, then stain. Try this on offcuts from the project first.
Sanding sealer then amber shellac might be a good option as well.Ken, I’ve had to go back and sand out too many small projects because of staining gone bad as Greg puts it lol. I gave up attempting it. It’s a personal choice. Shellacked or simply linseed oil and wax makes a really nice finish on pine. Those shelves might look nice with a milk paint too, maybe dark green or dark red depending on where they are going to be placed.
11 December 2013 at 12:10 am #23602I would like to recommend the milk paint stain technique that I used on the drop leaf table but it may have been a fluke. If the budget can stand it, I’m going to buy a few more colors of milk paint and do up some pine test boards. They make a pumpkin color that might produce and aged pine look. They also make a dark brown that might get me close to walnut. I’ll post photos if I can get the test pieces done up this weekend.
Ken, I’m no interior designer lol. Colour is so personal and honestly, I would place those units where they are going to live and leave them there for a couple weeks before trying to come up with a plan to finish them. Take a hard look at them and ask yourself if they look good with the bare wood in their surroundings, then if you think they might look good with milk paint, get some different colours and make some sample colours on some pine scraps and use them to decide which color would look good. Don’t blame me if you choose hot pink tho!
