Is it just me? I have a nice set of Narex chisels and I keep getting “paper” cuts on my hands from the side bevels.
Do you relieve the side edges to take some of the sharpness away or do I just need to learn to keep away from them.
It really sucks to find out you cut yourself because there is now blood on the white maple you are working on..
Thanks in advance for any input22 September 2016 at 5:54 pm #140742If they were mine i would dull them a bit. Then you wouldnt have to always worry. Just flatten enough to stop the cutting dont round them.
22 September 2016 at 7:58 pm #140754What is the idea of putting sharp (meaning no flat) side bevels on a chisel? Wouldn’t mortises be easier to cut if there were a small flat on the side bevel? I have a couple of chisels with sharp side bevels and they have a tendency to twist in the hole when cutting a mortise. I suppose they are good for getting into the corners of dovetails though. Maybe that’s the point.

22 September 2016 at 8:24 pm #140758I did dull mine. Its just because its a new chisel. Dulling the edges can’t negatively affect the performance. My Ashleys Iles don’t have those sharp edges
I had recently purchased a couple of Narex paring chisels from LV, and found that the sides were almost as sharp as the factory edge was! Some 600 grit automotive sandpaper (used sparingly) knocked down the side edges to the point that it won’t cut hands anymore.
My Narex bench chisels were not that bad, but fresh from the factory they were definitely uncomfortable until relieved.
