Hey, my 12mm chisel is out of square by almost the same amount, but in the opposite direction. Must be cuz it’s a Narex not Bahco. And my leg mortises were off in the middle.
What I did for the mortises (all eight) is pare in from the outside faces a little at a time with lots of dry test fitting The interior of the mortise is roomier now but the openings are tight around the tenon. I was pretty confident that my layout was good or at least okay. However I was pretty sure the skewed chisel caused my mortise cuts to drift.
To fix my skewed chisels, I am just putting a bit more pressure on the high side as I sharpen now. At least I am aware that I tend to wear down the left side of every edge I touch.
Yes, exactly what Ed said. Layout the new mortice, pare in from both sides, shim the tenon, size the tenon.
I am doing this restoring an old kids chair where the joints were loose and then fixed with screws & nails and glue and whatnot. The joint wobbled which ruined both the mortice and the tenon. I shimmed this one on both sides, otherwise it would be out of centre.
Also agree with what Debra said – if the mortice is a bit roomier in the middle of your leg that’s not so bad structurally. I think that’s to be preferred to having a too big a mortice/tenon, weakening the leg.
Let us know how you fare 🙂
