Hello, Paul Sellers uses diamond plates for sharpening chisels etc…but uses wet dry paper to flatten the backs of his chisels. Can i flatten the back of my chisels by directly going to the plates too using coarse , fine and extra fine? Was the paper used for a starter method or alternative? Thanks, Jeff
I think what it boils down to is that flattening a back can take a while depending on its initial condition, and a fresh piece of 100 grit paper cuts quite a bit faster than a coarse diamond stone. Also, that can be a lot of wear and tear on your diamonds, so I prefer to save them for actual sharpening.
I think you can still do it that way if you prefer. But I’d definitely finish off by polishing the back on a maple block with buffing compound.
I like having the highly polished back that sandpaper provides, but if the bevel never gets the same treatment in practice then I think the benefit to actual sharpness is minimal.
I’m having trouble sharpen Paul’s method my chisels seem to out of square even bigger ones , anyone help please
