Wow, so much in this episode. I got my white oak in, rough cut all the pieces to size, finish cut and planed the four posts and eight side bars, cut the grooves in everything with my Record 044. I’ve cut almost half the mortises, and 1/3 of the tenons, so I finally got one panel together last night. Whew!
My marking gauge seems to have slipped when I was marking the first tenon, so it wound up too deep and the cross bar was very proud. I wound up gluing a shim on the front cheek of the tenon and paring down the back. Now it’s good. The rest of them have gone pretty well.
One thing I’d warn against is when you are test fitting the mortise-and-tenons, and you want to remove one, put it in the vise and gently hammer it out. I was rocking it side to side, which works well, but also winds up bruising and rounding the edges of the mortise. Maybe this is common knowledge, but it’s my first M&T experience.
All in all, though, I’m really enjoying the project so far. It’s going quite well, thanks to Paul’s detailed instructions. So many little details, tricks and tips in each video. I watch each one several times.
