Have a D8 I bought off ebay. Handle looks pretty good but had been “cleaned” in other words not well. Finish is dull except in the cracks and crevices and it is very dirty.
I don’t want to sand the dirt in deeper — what’s best to clean it up first?
My thought is I’d clean it, sand it, then shellac it.
Plus, I’m going to learn how to sharpen… How much set to do you put in a rip saw?
KB, I’d probably scrape and sand first. If you need to clean, you can use mineral spirits to cut any greasy junk. I had thought that oil was a more traditional finish on saw handles that shellac, but not positive on that.
The amount of set I read once should be no more than half again as much as the saw plate thickness. So, for example, it he saw plate is 0.028″ thick, the set should be no more than 0.028″ + 0.014″ = 0.042″ (0.007″ on each side). But the key is NO MORE THAN. Personally, I think the saw set should be about a quarter again as much as the thickness. So in the above example, maybe just 0.003 or 0.004 on each side for a total set of 0.035″
Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.
