I just finished gluing up the carcass of my first dovetail box. Yes, I am actually doing something beside cleaning up old planes. 😀
I had cut a few practice dovetails over the last couple weeks in between other projects and finally felt ready to tackle something useful. It was slow and steady going, but I picked up a lot of confidence and I think it is turning out well.
Maybe tomorrow I will have some pictures of the box.
Jointer plane is finished… next project: sawbench.
Well, I ruined the lid of the box and had to re-make it and got busy with some other projects, but my first non-shop related project it finished. It’s a little poplar dovetail box. It does have some flaws… primarily I cut the hinge mortises on the lid too big and there is a little gap in front of the hinges. Because I re-made the lid, I ended up attaching the hinges to the lid last, and learned why Paul said to not do this. It was difficult getting everything lined up right.
Anyway, it turned out pretty good. I guess I’m not really a fan of poplar. My next box will be a different wood. These pieces look nice, but they are too light for this type of box. I also feel like it is brittle when I work with it and you have to be very careful with it.
Thanks for looking.

Of course I always use cheap hinges that have a lot of play in them. One of these days I’ll spring for some quality ones and see if it makes a difference.
Again, well done.
Thanks, guys.
Denise, I was happy with the dovetails. They all fit very snugly together, and I think the pronounced 14 pitch looks great. I had read Chris Schwarz saying he likes the 14 a lot and I have to agree. I also like the appearance of these poplar boards I found. They are white with a purplish-brown grain. Most of the poplar boards have a green color, which I think is ugly. It was a great learning experience as well.
