After reading the dovetail thread, I took a brake from building my workbench, and had a bit practice. It also gave me the chance to try my new dovetail chisels from Ashley Iles. The following description is from Matthew, he puts it far better than I could, I can say they were a joy to use. I have also added the 1/2″ and 3/4″ to this set. 🙂
The Ashley Iles Dovetail set consists of four superbly controllable, short bladed paring chisels with elliptical faces that form an acute angle along the sides of the blade; this design gives excellent clearance right into the corners of a joint. The chisels come in widths of 1/8″, 1/4″ and 3/8″ as well as a nice broad 1″ to give a crisp, level finish on larger areas.
For all those spots that you can’t quite get to with a straight bladed chisel, Ashley Iles have also added a pair of cabinetmakers fishtail skews. The tapered blades afford much better access and the sharply skewed cutting edges will trim right into the corners for a nice clean finish.
Although designed primarily for use as paring chisels these tools are strong enough to withstand the occasional tap with a light mallet.
Like all Ashley Iles tools, the dovetail chisels are unconditionally guaranteed for the duration of the purchaser’s life.

Any chance you could post a link to where you ordered the chisels? I would love to see more details on the 4 chisels on the left. Do you also get the 2x skew chisels in the set?

Yes the 2x skew are part of the set, you can also buy each chisel Individually

6 December 2012 at 3:41 pm #4325Nice looking chisels , Tools for Working Wood here in the US sells Ashley’s products. I have never used them but have heard great reviews on them. Most of my chisels are Vintage although I did buy the 1″ PMV11 that Lee Valley came out with and it is a fantastic chisel.

Anonymous6 December 2012 at 10:11 pm #4337I bought my dovetail chisels Individually, without the skews. If I find later on I think they will help, I will add them. I have not done many half blind dovetails, and I did not think the skews necessary and I got the job done ok.
6 December 2012 at 10:26 pm #4340Jesper, yes I do they are really good and well balanced, the machining goes without saying. I am retired now and live on a fixed income so I have to spend my money wisely. My sharping media is Sigma Power II as sold by Schtoo “Stu” from Tools from Japan ( no I am not affiliated with Stu ). Again these IMO are a well worth investment, I have the 200 grit, 1000, 6000 and 8000 grit and use a strop like Paul does. They sharpen very nicely and hold an edge for a very long time. I do want to add a 400 grit by forgot the name and the 13000 grit eventually and I flatten with in seconds with the Atoma 400 Diamond plate for that job only. I don’t like to buy tools two or three times over and am with Paul 96% of my tools are vintage and couldn’t be happier.
