In church this morning I noticed the design of the end of the pews. The bottom rails have through tenons into the stiles, stiles have haunched stopped tenons into the top rail with drawbores.
What do you think of drawboring, – are they needed with modern glue etc.?
Thanks
Dewi
Anonymous16 December 2012 at 10:55 am #4911Today’s glues virtually make draw-boring obsolete in terms of permanent assembly, but it is extremely useful when building knock-down pieces and/or assembling green timber framed structures. It is a belts and braces method of reinforcing mortise joints via the use of timber/wooden nails. 🙂
Anonymous16 December 2012 at 11:55 am #4913I nearly always draw-bore mortice and tenon joints. It’s a super strong joint without glue, used with todays modern glues it will last for ever.
No one really knows the life of modern glues, but one day it will brake down for sure.
Apart from that I think it looks great, even on fine furniture.

Anonymous16 December 2012 at 1:22 pm #4919Hi Dave,
Yes it is and is a method for pulling (Drawing) and holding mortise joints together. 🙂
16 December 2012 at 2:01 pm #4921When you remove the drawbore pin to place the dowel. What keeps the mortice pulled tight ? Also, Ive seen through pinning. What keeps the dowel from being so mangeled being hammered through the off aligned holes ? Seems the dowel coming out wouldnt be round anymore for a clean, gap free cutoff.
Thanks
Brent
Anonymous16 December 2012 at 2:08 pm #4922The pin is just to test the joint really Brent, It pull tight once you drive the peg home. The above link covers it all in detail buddy 🙂
Cheers
Ken
