Hi folks,
went to the sawmill yesterday to get some pine wood. I got some pretty nice boards, that I started to use today.
Using half of these boards to make a box for the shop, to put my finishing products. The pine is very easy to work with, compared to ash ! however, I noticed that some areas, particularly in and around knots, are quite “sapy”.
I got hands a bit sticky after working, and some wood fibres have been sticking to the planes soles. Is that a normal thing for pine, or do you think my boards aren’t dry enough ?
Sharing of experience more than welcome !
Cheers,
ChristopheChristophe,
If the timber was air dried then the pitch hasn’t been “set”.
If kiln dried, either the temperature wasn’t high enough or it wasn’t in the kiln long enough.
See:

Either way your wood is probably marginally useable since the pitch will continue to exude and there isn’t much you can do about it as far as I know.
Perhaps others more knowledgeable will chime in with their advise.
Best,
CraigThanks Craig for your feed back. I never heard of that before ! Good to know !
Well, I think this board (or at least the middle section) won’t be usable. I did use another board and didn’t have this problem. Seems that I picked a “bad” one.
Well, at least it smells good in the workshop 🙂
I think you’ve hit a raisin pocket…
Sticky stuff, in some cases they will continue to leak.
I had a few small ones when I was making my clamps, I’ve treated them by liberally flooding them with white spirit and then wiping it all off.It solved my problem, only the smell in the shop isn’t quite as nice.
The white spirit is also handy to clean up your entire plane as the stuff literally sticks everywhere, with the preference for the hard to get spots.
