I have liked that style of toolchest since I saw it in Toplins book. I’m fighting the urge to build it until I see Paul’s projects on tool storage.
That looks like a great chest to take tools to a remote location to work. I would rather have a chest to storing tools at home. It would need to have drawers or trays that I could remove and place on my workbench. Or be small enough to sit on the workbench.

20 February 2013 at 3:59 am #8203I know that tool chests are all the rage. I see two uses for them. Moving your tools from one site to another. Tool storage in a very small shop. Other than that, I really believe that for most of us, cabinets, racks, and shelves are a lot more pleasant to work from. Just my $.02

Actually, “the guy” is Chris Schwarz, who published a book titled “The Anarchist’s Tool Chest” a little while ago. Among other things that book is about his previous tool chest, which in the video you see very briefly at the left of the new one featured here (the bigger, unopened big black box). The old chest has some nice sliding drawers inside it, but I would consider it too heavy and bulky to be actually useful to transport your tools to anywhere. I am definitely waiting for Paul’s go at a tool chest before I might build my own one.

29 November 2013 at 3:12 pm #22625I love the look of Paul’s tool chest but for my small work area I need a one chest solution. I think this is going to be it. I will make it taller and add a second shelf in the lower compartment and probably a drawer just below the main compartment. This video is not very instructive but it does give a nice overview.
http://video.pbs.org/video/2365021526/I saw the Dutch tool chest video last weekend and liked it. I like this tool chest because of the smaller size than others and the slanted top. The slanted top would help me from cluttering up the lid and preventing access to the chest. I also likeidea of a dedicated writing surface. I did build Paul’s tool chest and had a lot of fun building it. But I still like the design of the Dutch chest and may consider making it after the holidays.
Thanks for sharing the video Greg!I’m probably going to end up moving some time next year and I would love to build some kind of a chest like this before I do. Would be so nice to already have my stuff packed in a permanent and portable chest. Does Schwarz have plans for this in his anarchist book?
