I have just completed two pencil boxes for my grandsons, I have finished them in Red and Blue wood dye. This is the first time I have used coloured dye, I still want the wood grain to show through,is it enough just to finish with wax or is it better to put a coat or coats of shellac on before the wax coat
Depending how dark they look in the morning I may also lightly sand before adding any more finishAttachments:

I have never dyed wood but I would be inclined to shellac so that the dye doesn’t bleed in the future especially if your grandsons will be the end users. Their mother may not be pleased with red and blue finger prints everywhere.10 February 2014 at 9:56 pm #27623Those are great David! I would put on a couple coats of shellac, buff with 0000 steel wool and then wax.
What kind of dye?11 February 2014 at 1:00 pm #27664Thanks for your kind comments, the wood dye is Liberon concentrated water based dye 15ml bottles at £3.30 per bottle from http://WWW.restexpress.co.uk I only added a few drops of dye to a small amount of water, enough I would say to colour two boxes. Dave I do not know what the difference is between dye and stain
