I had a chance to install my Eclipse 10″ vise this week. I went with a new vise since I didn’t want the potential issue of a used one not working properly.
Hardest part was getting the right measurements without taking the vise apart. De-greasing it took some time also.
I also made a template for the apron opening. Hopefully it will take the guesswork out for someone else.
Here are a few pictures. Thanks to all who previously commented with recommendations. I read through many of them on this site and were helpful in my final decision.

I put on my new vise on my bench last week. I took the vise apart though to make it easier to manage. Also, my bench does not have an apron so I didn’t have to cut out.
I did use four lag bolts to mount the back part of the vise to the bench top. Can you show how you screwed the vise to the bench? I am curious if the front apron gets in the way.
Thanks. Looks good!
6 March 2015 at 5:01 pm #125308Hi @Jude,
I used two 2 1/2″ Lag screws with washers on those 2 blue extensions showing in picture 20150304_164738.jpg. I couldn’t use the other 2 holes on the vise’s bottom piece since they ended up in the apron hole I carved out.
I used another two 2 1/2″ screws through the wood piece into the fixed jaw and right into the front of the apron. That’s what’s holding it against the apron.
This is my first “real” workbench, with a vise, so can’t make any comparison as to its position outside of the apron. It does feels solid though and is holding work pieces firmly.I’m glad I waited to get the 10″ vise.

You must be logged in to view attached files. You are awesome. I just got my 10″ eclipse in the mail and am eager to mount it to the bench. One quick question if you see this. How close to the edge of the top did you mount it. I mean from the top of your bench how much of a gap did you leave or do your jaws go right up to the edge. It looks, in Paul’s blog posts on mounting, that he leaves maybe a 1/2 inch thats taken up by the wood used for covering the jaws. Maybe I didn’t red the article close enough. Thanks for the great pictures and the template!
This looks great. Thanks for sharing.
@senrabc – If you haven’t already done so, 1/2″ will be fine. It really doesn’t matter much; but too close will cause problems with your plane striking the cast iron of the vise… More clearance is better, as long as your hardwood faces are strong enough to handle the wracking that will happen when clamping small pieces.20 October 2017 at 11:04 am #337614Hello, new member here,
I just installed my 9 inch Eclipse this past weekend. I will post pics if I can figure out how to do it. I ran into the same issue with the apron blocking the front bolt holes and I solved it by recessing the vise into the apron 3/4 of an inch and inserting a 3/4 piece of jaw material to bring it flush again to the apron. -
