I’ve had an Eclipse 9″ quick-release for several years now and it has served me well. However, the jaws have always been out of alignment, horizontally and vertically. I understand that most vises are intentionally out of alignment vertically– in that the top of the jaws meet before the bottom– in order to achieve good clamping pressure. (Is that correct?) On my vise, when the left side meets there is still a 1/8-inch gap on the right side. To eliminate this gap, I have shimmed or planed the outer jaw liner. I recently removed the vise for some needed maintenance and made a new set of jaw liners, which brought this issue to mind again. Is there any way to align the jaws other than modifying the liners?
Another irksome issue is the locking nut failing to engage. Example: Press the lever to disengage the locking nut. Pull the vise open. Insert workpiece. Push vise in. Turn handle to tighten. POP! Clamping pressure is released and workpiece falls to the floor. (Cursing.) I have learned to always turn the handle in reverse before turning it forward to tighten. This re-engages the locking nut before I begin tightening.
To summarize my questions– are these just faults in the device for which I just have to compensate? Are there fixes? Are there vises available without these faults? (This is my first such vise.)

I didn’t have any trouble with it, but I did have to change the half not twice. I finally took it off, because it just kind of quit working for me, I wasn’t too happy with it. I did like the width of the jaw openings on it though. Miss that.
