End grain mortise

I will be making a mortise soon to recess some hardware. Unfortunately the mortise will be on the end grain of a crib bed rail. Anyone have ideas how to accomplish this without spitting the end of the board?

You could drill out the centre to ease some of the chopping pressure and pare the edges with a chisel.
I did my bed rail mortises with a Festool domino.
