I just finished building my workbench and I am thinking of installing a tail vise. I used a Jorgensen bench vise for the face vise, it is similar to the popular vise that Paul uses, just in case someone wasn’t familiar with which vise I am talking about and I want to use the same for the tail vise.
When installing the face vise, I noticed the directions said not to install the vise on end grain. Seeing as how I used Paul’s bench design, I find myself with a dilemma.
I noticed in the workbench photo gallery that a couple guys installed similar vises on the end of their bench (one of which might actually be the same vise I want to use). Has anyone reading this used a vise like this on end grain? If so, how did it work for you? Is the warning in the directions just to cover any legal liability?28 February 2014 at 8:00 am #28442I’m interested in this too. I’ gathering things together for my workbench and have two record 52 1/2 we vices – one of which I’m thinking if fitting as a tail vice
1 March 2014 at 5:53 am #28469@ Paul Sellers. Thank you very much for your reply! It’s funny that you should reply to this, because you are the person I really wanted to hear from. I noticed in your workbench blog that you installed a tail vise. So I trust your opinion. I can’t wait to post pictures of the finished bench for you to see, I am very proud.
I feel special, Paul Sellers, commenting on my thread post. LOL! you just made my night.1 March 2014 at 10:09 am #28470Hey Nathan, glad to hear you finished your bench, Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing the pictures as well.
I installed a small woodworking vise as a tail vise on my bench. Most of the screws are up into the benchtop from the bottom and that isn’t end-grain. I instaaled it flush with the front of the benchtop. I love it for clamping vertical boards for ripping to width.
