Hey everybody! I’m new to the forums and fairly new to hand tool woodworking. I have been at it for a few months and love it! My 9 year old daughter really seems to have an interest in woodworking too. So, I’ve been teaching her some things: safety, what various tools are, and a housing dado joint. She also loves to cook. So, I thought maybe the first project should be making a spoon. I believe I have heard Paul say this is a great first project for kids. What are your thoughts? I haven’t made a spoon yet but would like to. I’d love to hear any of your ideas! Thanks and have a great day! 🙂
I think Paul likes that project for kids because they can use a spokeshave and kids love that (and it’s fairly safe). A little carrying tote would also be a great kids project – maybe a smaller version of the Sellers tote. And maybe painted pink (ha). Whatever project you choose, I would recommend you do it first by yourself to be better able to judge any safety concerns.
Thanks Matt! I will definitely be making several of whatever project(s) I choose with my daughter well before hand. I’m big on safety and also being able to move at a pace that is safe and still interesting for kids. My daughter will be a big help in figuring these things out. By the way, I have checked out some of your work on the projects page and it is great! Thanks again!
