Since I plan on making a workbench soon, I figured I would need some winding sticks. I followed Paul’s two part series from YouTube, and quickly realized that to make winding sticks I would need…winding sticks. My mahogany raw stock had some twist, so I quickly planed some scraps of pine and put a dark pencil line on one to act as temporary winding sticks. Problem solved.
The finished ‘real’ winding sticks turned out great (picture attached), with one minor problem. I was proudly showing off my skilled work to my wife and she took one look and said ‘the dots aren’t in the middle’. I looked at her like she was crazy, and then I looked at the stick with the maple insets and said to myself, ‘SON OF A …..’.
I had been so careful; following the video meticulously: sawing, planing, rebating, chiseling, routering, drilling and I messed up the simplest thing. To make matters worse, since the ‘center’ mark of the second stick was transferred from the first, the error is doubled. It’s about 1/2″ total. No clue how I made the mistake. Dividing 17 by 2 isn’t rocket science, but I marked the center at 8-1/4″ instead of 8-1/2″.
I’m still proud of them and enjoyed every minute of making them.
The worst part was my lack of a proper bench. These were made using a 15 year old Black and Decker Workmate like the one shown in the attached picture. Words can’t describe how difficult it is to plane (especially end grain) using that thing. Second worst problem was that my rip saw is a 26″ long, 6 PPI monster. When I cut the raw stock down the middle it looked like I had used a dull chainsaw operated by a blind man. Luckily, the stock was oversize and I was able to plane it back into shape. I have a nice 16″ Disston from E-bay on the way this week for future projects.

I’s funny how these little errors can be missed. The winding sticks should still work fine and if a person didn’t know the dots should have been centered who cares! Looks like you have a functional set of winding sticks. I made a boo boo on a cabinet I was building several years ago. I had posted pictures of this thing all over the place. I was looking at the picture one day and said “Son of a….” See if you can find my mistake. 🙂

28 December 2018 at 9:13 pm #554149I, after reading this, and thinking about it during layout, somehow messed up on mine also haha
I could not believe it.
its not a huge deal, one dovetail inlay is an 1/8″ further from the end of the stick than the other, but I couldnt stop shaking my head at myself.
