I have some butternut wood that I would like to use for the hall table project. Like most butternut, it has marks where the fungus has attacked the tree. What is the best way to remedy this for a smooth surface?
thanks,
Nate
I am not sure what is in the holes is fungi. I think it is saw dust left over by the bug that burrowed into the wood.
I would try to embrace these “warts”. You can either clean them out with a vacuum ending up with worm holes or you can trap the residue currently in the holes by using thin super glue (CA)glue and then work the wood as normal.
Depending on how you plan to finish it, you might want to just clean out and fill the worm sign with a contrasting or even glow-in-the-dark filler. I have a request of a glow-in-the-dark worm sign table on my projects list.
By the way, that is some nice looking wood. How wide is the board?
